Meditate? I’m too busy for that!

Are you too busy to meditate? Well, join the club!

As someone who forces myself to even sit still never mind meditate I fully understand that finding the time to focus on yourself rather than your phone can be a real challenge, I mean who needs inner peace when you can scroll through Instagram for hours, right?

Why meditate?

We’ve all heard of the benefits of meditation and the calm it can bring to the mind and body, its hard not to, open any social media app and you’ll be bombarded with meditation challenges, links to websites, courses and shops advertising special equipment.

But none of that is really necessary, sure a cushion is a nice thing to have but ultimately all you really need is you. To experience meditation you have to do it, try it all, like buying a new pair of running shoes you have to find the perfect fit for you.

There are so many different styles of meditation, don’t like sitting? have you laid down instead or even considered a walking meditation? Cant sit crossed legged? or don’t like closing your eyes? don’t. The most important aspect of meditation is being comfortable before you even begin.

How do I do it?

Ultimately the goal of meditation is to find a moment of calm within your mind, its not to completely blank those thoughts out but instead notice the thoughts and find space between them.

So find your self quiet spot where you won't be disturbed.

Adopt a comfortable position. Cross-legged on the floor is a classic, but if you prefer to meditate while lying down, who am I to judge?

Now, close your eyes and take a deep breath in. And out. And, wait, did you remember to turn off your phone? Because if it starts blasting "Baby Shark" in the middle of your meditation, your inner peace is going out the window.

Okay, where were we? Right, deep breaths. Inhale...exhale...ahh, this is nice. Wait, what's that noise? Is someone snoring? Oh no, it's just me. Anyway, focus on your breath.

Thoughts will inevitably pop into your head, but don't get discouraged. Just imagine them as clouds drifting by, and gently guide your attention back to your breath.

And that's it! Congratulations, you just meditated.

Now, go forth and namaslay like a boss.
