So, you’ve heard about yoga, maybe you’ve even thought about giving it a go. But there’s this little voice in your head that says, “Nah, yoga’s not for me.” Well, guess what? That voice is lying. Yoga has picked up a few myths along the way, and today, we’re here to bust them wide open. Let’s debunk five of the most common myths about yoga—so you can finally give it a try!

Myth 1: You have to be flexible to do yoga
Ah, the classic one. You know, the idea that you need to bend like a pretzel just to take part in a yoga class. Here’s the reality: if flexibility were a requirement, about 99% of us wouldn’t be doing yoga at all!
Yoga isn’t about being bendy; it’s about working with your body as it is. The whole point is to develop flexibility over time, not show up already twisting like a gymnast. So, if you can touch your toes, or maybe just your knees you’re perfectly fine to start.
Myth 2: Yoga is just for relaxation (AKA nap time)
Sure, yoga can be super relaxing, and who doesn’t love a good savasana at the end of class (basically, an adult nap)? But yoga isn’t just about chilling out.
If you’ve ever tried Power Yoga or Ashtanga, you’ll know yoga can properly challenge you. We’re talking sweat, muscle engagement, and even cardio. So, while yoga can be zen, it can also give you a solid workout that’ll have you rethinking that "yoga is easy" attitude.
Myth 3: You have to be young and fit to do yoga
This is one of those myths that makes people shy away from yoga because they think they’re not the “right type.” Spoiler alert: there’s no "right type" for yoga! You don’t need to be 20, wearing designer leggings, and doing handstands to practise. Yoga is for every body, whether you’re active, less mobile, or anywhere in between.
Whether you're 9 or 90, yoga is about tuning into your body, not forcing it into impossible poses. So, no excuses, if you can breathe, you can do yoga.
Myth 4: Yoga is too “Spiritual” for me
Yoga has some ancient roots in India, sure, but that doesn’t mean you have to chant or suddenly start wearing robes. Modern yoga is what you make of it.
If you’re into the spiritual side, great! If you’re more about the stretching, movement, and breathing, that’s fine too. Yoga is a flexible (pun intended) practice that works for everyone. No crystals required, unless you’re into that sort of thing, of course.
Myth 5: You need fancy gear to do yoga
Let’s be real: marketing can make you think you need a £50 yoga mat, blocks, straps, and all sorts just to get started. But here’s the truth: all you really need is yourself and a little space.
A mat? Optional. A cushion? Nice, but not essential. If you’re lying on your living room floor in comfy clothes with a towel under you, you’re doing yoga. It’s that simple. Yoga is about getting in touch with your body, not spending loads of money on gear.
So, why do these myths matter?
These myths stop people from experiencing the many benefits of yoga. And trust me, there are loads. Whether it’s helping you de-stress, improve flexibility, or just giving you an excuse to stretch after a day of sitting, yoga is for everyone, not just the bendy, spiritual, or zen crowd.
Yoga is about you and your journey. It’s not about being perfect. So let go of those misconceptions, stop believing the myths, and give it a try. Yoga is about progress, not perfection!
